Mesh Decimation Service

You can use our fully-automated mesh decimation service if you don't want to download and process the raw data by yourself. We can offer this service for regions whose authorities have released their digital elevation models under licenses that allow us to use their data in a commercial setting. As of August 2017 our database covers 305,000 km². Please note that we can't guarantee that the data is without errors and suitable for your needs.

To use our mesh decimation service you'll have to purchase decimation keys from ShareIT/Digital River after you've used up the three free keys included in every planlauf/TERRAIN installation. Please remember that we charge for the mesh decimation only, the original data is available for free from the original sources. For each requested Zip-package one decimation key is required and you can select an area of up to 100,000,000 points. You can use these files with the free version of planlauf/TERRAIN, purchasing the full version is not necessary.

How to request a planlauf/TERRAIN Zip-package

  1. Click on the 'Request a planlauf/TERRAIN Zip-package' icon.
  2. The region button shows the shape of the currently selected region. Click on it to open the menu.
  3. Choose 'Germany'.
  4. Choose 'Nordrhein-Westfalen'.

If you plan to use the model for hiking, you can import a GPX or KML track and show it on the map. You will then get the Zip-package with a readily imported track. If you don't have a GPX or KML track you can simply skip this step.

  1. Click on the 'Import GPX/KML Tracks' icon.
  2. Choose a GPX file.
  3. Click 'Open'.

  2. Draw a selection rectangle and adjust the corners by dragging the orange points
  1. Click on the 'Request planlauf/TERRAIN Zip-package' icon.
  2. Enter the name of the model.
  3. Enter an Email address to which we can send the download link.
  4. Choose a profile (tablet, laptop or desktop).
  5. Click on the request button.
  1. You will get an Email when the mesh decimation has been started and another Email once the model is ready.
  2. Right-click on the download link and select 'Save Link As' and save the plfzip-file to your Documents folder.
  1. Click on the 'Open' icon.
  2. Select 'Zip-package'.
  3. Choose the plfzip-file in your Documents folder and click 'Open'.
  1. That's it, notice how the original point count of 10,000,000 was reduced to only 63,286.
